Josh's Crash!

The ride was Anzac day 2007. I'd just done about 2 hours riding through the Black Spur (a twisty, hilly section of road north-east of Melbourne.) The ride was fun and the scenery along the way awesome. After a BBQ lunch with about 100-150 other riders, the small group of learners headed off back down the Spur.

Unfortunately I was a little fatigued and that combined with inexperience lead me to let my guard down. I lost concentration and when faced with the sight of an impending T-junction I couldn't figure out which way I was supposed to go. Instead of slowing to a stop, I kept on going and decided half way through that I should be going the other way. The gravel took care of the rest. The bike skidded off ahead of me and stopped short of the other side of the junction. I landed half-proped up against the island in the middle.

Where I landed I was half-proped up against the island in the middle. There was a funny side to the accident. Aside from where and how I landed, the scrape in the road and the island are quite impressive. The bike was virtually unmarked; it did sustain a curved shift lever and the left-hand peg was stuffed. My left leg got dragged along behind, and my foot and ankle copped most of the bruising.

There were many good lessons to come out of the off, but one of the biggest is just that you need to have your head in the right place to ride safely. I was pretty quick to figure out the contributing factors in the accident and change my riding to address those issues. The best thing is it didn't put me off riding.

The culprit...

I stopped here...

Bike stopped there...

Not too much damage!

Thanks to Steve for the pictures.
